It Disappeared Over 10 Years Of "Fishing Cat" To Reproduce In Cambodia's Wetlands

Cambodia wetland environment since 2003 has seen the activities of fishing cat trail, at present, scientists once again taken to the fishing cat.



Currently, Cambodia Biodiversity Conservation Center (CBC) The researchers found that since 2003 the mysterious disappearance of fishing cat, fishing cat's scientific name is "Prionailurus viverrinus", which is like to live in the wetland environment of wild cats.



Allegedly, fishing cats since 2003 disappeared in Cambodia region, currently Cambodia Biodiversity Conservation Center researchers set high sensitivity motion capture cameras to trace the activities of fishing cat.



Research project leader Hamlet - Don said: "Fishing cats like wetland habitat, the Asian wetland environment rapidly disappearing, and human activities over the past decade fishing cat quantity sharp decline, some Asian fishing cats wetland environment has disappeared.



Scientists believe that fishing cat disappeared extinct in Vietnam, Laos has found no traces of the activities of fishing cat, fishing cat found only a few areas in Thailand and Cambodia. The current is very clear that we need to protect these fishing cat, avoid the use of traps and man-hunting, and committed to protecting the wetland environment.



After interviews with local villagers researchers to understand the activities of fishing cat, they set up 32 cameras at five locations for shooting records may pass through the fishing cat. By screening taking pictures, they were surprised to find two locations in southwest Cambodia have fishing cat trail activities, these two sites are: Peam Krosaop Rem Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park.



Currently, the researchers focused on fishing cat conservation action plan to carry out in these two protected areas, which is mainly related to the guidance of local residents to actively protect this species and fishing cats threaten the survival analysis of risk factors. Leiter - Don said: "We will continue to expand research and improve the local administrators to identify fishing cat's ability to help study and protect fishing cat.
