Win10 VS Win8: Performance Tests Show That The Two Well-Matched

In mainstream tests, Windows 10, compared with Windows 8 no performance advantage, but we do not deny it, because Win10 will open DirectX 12 era.

At present, very difficult to figure out Windows 10 performance. To this plan on July 29 release of the operating system for testing and is not easy, because the public can not install the RTM version. Microsoft has not disclosed the underlying technology change Windows 10. To make matters worse, Microsoft hardware partners have been completely prohibited to disclose information about Windows 10's.

One thing is certain: in many changes compared to the Windows 8 as the only Microsoft operating systems that support DirectX 12, Windows 10 may have considerable graphics performance greatly improved. Early tests show that the performance of other aspects of Windows 10 upgrade much smaller.

To test the performance of Windows 10, PCWorld using two identical HP Spectre x360 notebook, a computer with Windows 10 Home Edition build 10240, another one installed Windows 8.1 Home Edition.

Both notebooks configured with the same display, battery, are equipped with 8GB LPDDR3 memory, 128GB solid state drive, Intel Core i5-5200U processor, running the same BIOS. In addition to operating system, they are identical.

To understand the differences between the two operating systems in terms of performance, PCWorld test run a variety of software, including compression test, test chess, 3D rendering test, and DX9 and DX11 test.

PCWorld hope two operating systems in terms of performance of the disparity difference, but in fact they are well-matched, the difference is quite small.

For example, the following figure is two operating systems PCMark 8 Creative Conventional test scores. PCMark simulate a variety of "real world" application load, Creative Conventional analog surfing, photo editing, video editing, games and hangout for testing. Home load adds casual games.

Above chart shows the performance of the two operating systems are almost identical. In almost all projects, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 test results are similar: both matched on most projects, some projects on Windows 10 have a very slight advantage.

What about games?

Windows 10 "commitments" have a better performance in the game. DirectX 12 should be able to boost support for its gaming performance, but do not support DirectX 12 games, the performance of Windows 10 and Windows 8 is very close.

For example, PCWorld run the "Tomb Raider" (Tomb Raider) in its zero system (zero-point system) on. System Configuration Intel Core i7-4770K processor, 16GB DDR3 / 1600 memory and GeForce GTX 980 graphics card. PCWorld for the two operating systems installed on the same NVIDIA drivers. But PCWorld are running Windows 10 build 10162 instead of the current build 10240. PCWorld's tests showed that although small, but Windows 10 does have advantages.

Other tests show that Windows 10 bigger advantage, but not very big.

Two key issues need to be pointed out that: First, although users generally are not interested to Windows 8, but this operating system quickly. For example, when "Battlefield 4" (Battlefield 4) just released, there are media reports attributed to many of its performance for the system to run Windows 8 instead of Windows 7. Windows 8 improvements in terms of video and audio decoding, which also raised its operating speed. Second, if Windows 8 to run faster, Windows 10 operating speed will be faster.

This is not conclusive

PCWorld initial tests have many items not involved. Microsoft may also improve battery life Windows 10 system, the file system and other projects. After obtaining the appropriate Windows 10 ISO file, PCWorld you can perform a clean install, have Windows 10 in terms of performance of the project not covered today have a better understanding.

Operating system performance tests also faces other challenges. PCWorld run many tests are designed to test the hardware rather than software, operating system performance and design. For example, even though the operating system has a certain influence, Cinebench R15 is a pure CPU test software. Before SP1 release, Windows Vista USB impact on performance is great, the operating system overhead dragged down the performance of other aspects.

In conclusion

In mainstream tests, Windows 10, compared with Windows 8 no performance advantage, but we do not deny it - because there is no reason. In Windows 7, Microsoft updated the operating system, CPU scheduler, improved configuration of Intel and AMD processor-based systems performance, battery life. It will not be itemized Windows minus 10, because Windows 8.1 performance has been very good.

The need to remind the reader again, Windows 10 will open DirectX 12 era. DirectX 12 support will greatly enhance the performance of its game.
