Russia Will Be Self-Developed Mobile Operating System

Russian Communications Minister expect the new operating system is to grab nearly half of the market share within ten years.


Competition in the global smartphone operating system, mainly the competition between the two US companies (Google and Apple), the Russian government is dissatisfied.

Russian Minister of Communications today announced that Russia plans to develop a new mobile phone operating system produced in Russia.

Currently, Android and iOS system accounted for a total of 95 percent of Russia's smartphone market, but Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov want this figure in 10 years to 50%.

The new operating system will be based Sailfish research and development. Sailfish is the Finnish mobile phone maker Jolla research and development of open-source mobile operating system.


Before announcing the plan, Russia passed a law requiring all Russian citizens to save information technology companies to store the data in Russia. Following the adoption of this law, there have been media predicted that Apple may be a total ban in Russia.

However, even such rumors eventually did not come true, but the Russian government apparently wants its citizens to use domestic mobile phone platform. Snowden came to light after the US government surveillance program, the international community's confidence in the US technology company's products have been shaken. The Russian government move could be made in response to this matter.

After the Russian annexation of the West Crimea impose sanctions, the relationship between Russia and the West fell into the lowest point. The introduction of domestic mobile phone operating system will help to reduce Russia's dependence on Western companies.
